What Sparked My Passion
Being able to capture a single moment in time has always been fascinating to me. My high school studio arts teacher, however, is whom I have to thank for sparking my passion for photography enough to eventually pursue it as a career.
After being assigned a project in which I had to photograph nature, I set out with my Canon AE-1 35mm SLR camera. While snapping photo after photo of plants and bugs is so far from what I do now, I remember loving every moment of it. That afternoon changed my life; I knew I was hooked.
I moved on to wanting to photograph people; so much emotion can be conveyed in a frame. I began pointing my camera at anyone who would let me – family, friends and kids –, dragging them around incessantly until I got that perfect shot.
I was falling in love with photography, delving deeper into it every day. Wanting this as a career was a fast and easy decision.
After graduating high school, I was accepted into the International College of Professional Photography – I was thrilled. Being surrounded by people who were as passionate as I was made me thrive.
The Beginnings of My Business
Whilst studying, I worked as an assistant photographer for commercial shoots and, eventually, weddings. I soaked everything in, adapting quickly to situations that are involved in wedding photography.
The day I was asked to shoot my first wedding on my own was one I’ll never forget. While my clients knew I was just starting out, they felt confident enough in me to photograph the most important day of their life! I was honoured and elated, accepting the opportunity in a heartbeat.
Shooting a wedding for the first time was an absolute rush. It felt amazing working one on one with clients, capturing unrepeatable moments as the day unfolded. The joy and love in the atmosphere was intoxicating; the excitement of the couple and the guests resonated in every photograph. Enabling them to hold on to these memories they will be able to share for years to come was so rewarding.
I knew that this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. That is when my business, Madeleine Chiller, began.
While I am based in Melbourne, Victoria, I am available to travel throughout Australia and internationally on commission. I can’t wait to see where my camera takes me next!
I am very fortunate to work in an industry that allows me to be creative with my work and capture stories from all around the world.
